E-Consultant March 2026
Human Intelligence. Decades in the Making.
At NELSON, innovation has always been at the heart of what we do.
As early adopters of new design tools, we’ve consistently used technology to boost productivity and deliver exceptional results for our clients. In fact, we were the first consulting engineering company in New Orleans to install a mainframe computer onsite, writing innovative in-house programs and using early off-the-shelf software. As technology evolved, so did we. From hardware advancements to software breakthroughs, we’ve continually adapted to stay at the forefront of design practices. Today, the buzz around artificial intelligence (AI) based on large language models (LLMs) has sparked widespread interest in their potential applications for engineering design. While the future of this technology unfolds, it’s worth noting that we’ve long relied on our own version of these acronyms: Accumulated Intelligence based on our Long-Life Model (AI-LLM).
3,100+ YEARS OF COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE
A recent staff census revealed that our team collectively holds more than 3,100 years of experience at NELSON. This wealth of experience sets us apart and gives us a unique advantage. When a new project comes through our doors, it’s highly likely that someone on our team has encountered a similar challenge before.
With an 80-year history spanning private, public and institutional sectors, our multi-discipline expertise has enabled us to tackle some of the most complex design challenges, resulting in groundbreaking achievements and a few world’s firsts, including:
- Supporting offshore platform installations in water depths from 10 feet to 9,500 feet.
- Designing waterfront structures from the mouth of the Mississippi River up into the American Midwest and in overseas locations.
- Creating manufacturing and engine test facilities that launched manned spacecraft into orbit.
- Designing industrial and mining facilities across the United States, Canada and overseas.
- Designing pipeline compressor stations throughout the United States.
- Designing intermodal transfer and storage facilities for solids, liquids and gases.
A HUMAN-CENTERED APPROACH TO INNOVATION
Our long tenure and extensive range of practice mean that whatever challenge our clients bring to the table, there’s a good chance we’ve handled it (or something similar) before.
This depth of experience allows us to provide not only solutions but also valuable lessons learned from past projects. Unlike traditional AI tools that deliver answers in nanoseconds, our AI-LLM approach is rooted in human expertise and collaboration. It’s not just about speed, it’s about depth, context and understanding. Often, all it takes is a conversation in our coffee break room to uncover a “been there, done that” solution, complete with insights and cautionary advice to guide your project to success.
LET’S COLLABORATE!
At NELSON, we believe that innovation is powered by people. Technology is a powerful enabler, but it’s our collective experience and human ingenuity that truly set us apart.
If you’re ready to leverage our Accumulated Intelligence and Long-Life Model for your next project, contact Tom Wells or Marcel Danos. Together, we’ll turn decades of experience into actionable solutions tailored to your needs.
